Domestic Violence Awareness Month

OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

“Violence against women, inside or outside the home, is never justified, and it is a sin and often a crime … No one is expected to stay in an abusive marriage.” The U.S. Catholic Bishops, 2002 letter, When I Call for Help.

Approximately 9 of 10 people who are abused are women, but men are abused as well. The forms of abuse include physical, emotional or verbal, economic, and sexual.

How can you help?

Share information about this all too hidden problem and that there is help available. Support a friend who may be abused by listening without judgement, encouraging your friend to seek professional help, respecting your friend’s right to make decisions at their own pace, and assuring your friend that they are not alone Contribute to shelters and services for those dealing with domestic violence issues.

If someone is in imminent danger, call 911.

For free assistance or referrals, call the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline 1-877-863-6338, 1-877-863-6339 (TTY) or the National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), 1-800-787-3224 (TTY)

Members of the Domestic Violence Ministry of Old St. Mary’s will be available after the weekend Masses on Oct. 22nd & 23rd to collect “$$ for Soles” for the House of Good Shepherd.

The House, which is part of Catholic Charities, provides shelter for abused women and their children, as well as opportunities for educational, emotional, and spiritual growth. The House has a current need for shoes for the children and teens who are currently living there. The contributions you give will be used to purchase shoes in the sizes needed and to support the House in other ways.
Cash or checks (made out to the House of Good Shepherd), no matter how great or small, are appreciated. You can also contribute directly to the House via its web site: www.hgschicago.org  or mail to:
