Liturgy of the Word for Children

Old St. Mary’s offers Liturgy of the Word for Children on Sunday mornings during the 11:00 AM Mass from September through the first two weeks of May.  The classes are for children in pre-kindergarten through third grade.  (Younger children are unable to sit and listen for the 20 minutes of the program.)  The children are invited to gather at the foot of the altar after the Opening Prayer of the liturgy and are dismissed for the lesson, returning to the assembly after the Prayer of the Faithful.

The gospel of the day is presented to the children in age-appropriate language along with occasional activities based on the gospel message.  Because this program involves children, adult volunteers must be Virtus compliant. Volunteers are screened and trained to facilitate the Liturgy of the Word for Children.  This is a team activity. There must always be at least two facilitators.

Our Liturgy of the Word for Children program was suspended during the pandemic, but we will be starting up again on September 17, 2023.
