The people of Old St. Mary’s Catholic Church send our warm congratulations and prayerful best wishes to Pope Leo XIV (Cardinal Robert Prevost) as he begins his pontificate. We join our prayers with those of the universal Church, asking for the Holy Spirit to guide him in his ministry.
We’ve noticed some understandable mix-ups in media coverage about Pope Leo XIV’s connection to Old St. Mary’s. While we share the joy of this historic moment for the Church, Pope Leo XIV did not grow up at Old St. Mary’s. For those seeking more information about his home parish, please contact Christ Our Savior Parish: christoursaviorparish.org, 880 E. 154th St., South Holland, IL 60473-1105.
Pope Leo grew up at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish at 310 E. 137th Street in Chicago, where he also attended St. Mary of the Assumption Parish School. In 2011, that parish was merged into St. Mary Queen of Apostles Parish in Riverdale. St. Mary Queen of Apostles was later merged into Christ Our Savior Parish.
