MISSION AND PURPOSE
The Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is a key advisory board assisting the Pastor in carrying out the parish mission:
Old St. Mary’s welcomes and accompanies everyone on their faith journey. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, our diverse community encourages people to grow their relationship with Jesus Christ and one another through Eucharist, worship, prayer, education, and service.
PPC members assist the Pastor in making strategic decisions. They also make an active effort to know the hopes, dreams, fears, and concerns of the full diversity of people in the Parish. Please do not hesitate to reach out to any member of the PPC to share your questions, compliments, concerns, and suggestions about the direction of Old St. Mary’s Parish. You can also email us at parishcouncil@oldstmarys.com.

I’ve been a parishioner at Old St. Mary’s for six years and am currently serving my fifth year on the parish council. Originally from St. Louis, I moved to Chicago over 40 years ago. A graduate of the University of Chicago, I’ve worked in finance throughout my career. Married and the proud father of three children, I am committed to supporting the growth and vitality of Old St. Mary’s as a place of worship, community, and outreach. My hope is that my leadership on the parish council reflects my dedication to fostering a strong, welcoming environment for all parishioners. |

I am honored to serve on the Parish Pastoral Council at Old St. Mary’s, where I work with fellow members to support our parish’s mission and community life. My passion is fostering connection, service, and growth within our faith community. I bring my experience in leadership, mentorship, and community engagement to help strengthen our parish and serve its needs with dedication. I hold an Associate degree in Health Care Management from the University of Benin, a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Ambrose Alli University, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Purdue University. |

I am Katie Ellis, and I joined Old St. Mary’s when I moved to the South Loop in 2011. I started getting involved with OSM parish ministries by helping with baptisms at Saturday Mass, then became a catechist in the Sunday Faith Formation program. I have enjoyed meeting the OSM Community in these ministries and am continually inspired by the faith and generosity shared in this parish. My husband, Josh, and I have two wonderful kids, Evelyn and Xavier, who join me in many of these adventures. |

My name is James Gross, originally from Chester, IL, where I attended St. Mary’s Catholic School through 8th grade. I moved to the South Loop in 2008 after studying Finance at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. I’ve led customer service and operations teams in Chicago. My wife and I were married at Old St. Mary’s in 2012, and our son was baptized there in 2022. Becoming a father—especially experiencing the divine moment of my son’s baptism—sparked a deeper desire to grow in faith and serve, which led me to join the Parish Pastoral Council. |

Originally from Milwaukee, my husband, Jim and I have been parishioners at OSM for 20 years. We have four adult daughters, three granddaughters and one grandson.
I have served on the staffs of several parishes, including Old St Mary’s Parish. For the past 6 years, I have served as the Director of Pastoral Accompaniment, as an employee of the Archdiocese Of Chicago Pastoral Center. I am committed to the goal of renewal for the Church. I believe the Holy Spirit is guiding us as the people of Old St Mary’s to create a place where all are welcome, a place where all people are free to question and to grow as they deepen their relationship with God. |

As a member of Old St. Mary’s Parish Pastoral Council, I am eager to connect with and serve our vibrant community. My experience as a Senior Software Engineer helps me bring strategic planning and problem-solving skills to our council. I am passionate about shaping the parish’s vision and fostering meaningful relationships. By understanding your needs, I aim to align my expertise with our community goals. In my spare time, I enjoy specialty coffee, travel, and photography. I am excited to engage with fellow parishioners and contribute to a thriving parish environment rooted in faith and shared growth. Feel free to share your thoughts or just say hello! |

I am honored to join the Parish Pastoral Council this year! My husband, Tom, and I have been OSM parishioners and South Loop residents for 18+ years. This is our 9th year as proud OSM school parents (Dominic-6th & Marco-3rd). A native Texan, I graduated from Duke University and worked in corporate finance strategy for over 21 years. I previously served in various capacities at Old St. Mary’s School over the years, including FSA President, VP and chair of various committees and events. I also currently serve on the Cradles to Crayons Chicago Board of Directors. I am excited to work with Fr. Rich and the council and contribute to the continued growth, engagement and vitality of our special parish community! |

My name is Matt Smith and my wife Katie and I are the parents of an OSM Parish School 7th grader, Dylan. Our family has been part of the OSM community since Dylan started in Pre-K3 (2016). I have been involved with OSM School serving in multiple capacities with the FSA, School Advisory Board, and am a current member of the Development Committee and Parent Advisory Council. I’m grateful for the opportunity to support the parish and school community. Old St. Mary’s is an incredibly special and welcoming faith community that helps people know the love and care of God and meets them where they are. |

Hi, I am Emmanuelle Rousseau-Osial! I joined the Old St. Mary’s parish when my husband and I moved across the street from the Church when we first were married 10 years ago. We now have three kids, two who attend OSM (Genevieve and Renée) and our youngest is in pre-school (Stephen). I have been involved for several years as a catechist in the Sunday Faith Formation program and volunteering in the school. I graduated from the University of Chicago with my BA and MBA and work now in market research. My developing passion on the side is ghostwriting memoirs and seeing God’s work in people’s lives. I am so excited to be serving in my first year on the Parish Pastoral Council and helping continue the work of this amazing community that has meant so much to me. |

I’ve been serving as the pastor of Old St. Mary’s since July 2024, and I’m thrilled to be here! Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, I was ordained as a Catholic priest with the Paulist Fathers in 2012. Since then, I have served in Knoxville, TN (2012-16); Austin, TX (2016-22); and Boston, MA (2022-24). As a former optical engineer who facilitated seminars on the “soft skills” needed for the workplace, I’m grateful to the members of the Parish Pastoral Council who serve as important strategic partners in considering the future of Old St. Mary’s for generations to come! |
Membership and Terms:
PPC members are appointed by the Pastor to represent the full diversity of the Parish community, with at least 20% being family members of current students in Old St. Mary’s School. Members serve staggered 3-year terms, which can be renewed for an additional 3 years.
Anyone interested in serving on the Parish Pastoral Council should contact the pastor directly.
Duties of PPC Members
The PPC will meet in-person on the second Monday of every month from 7-9 pm, unless there is a conflict. They should have the following gifts:
- A desire to learn about and develop the evangelizing mission of Old St. Mary’s Catholic Parish and the Paulist Fathers. They should desire to expand the membership of Old St. Mary’s Parish, especially to people who do not belong to any community of faith or who feel marginalized by their community of faith.
- The ability to consider multiple points of view simultaneously and to bring the concerns of others to the decision-making table.
- The willingness to share one’s opinion in front of the other PPC members during a meeting, especially if that opinion is different than the other members of the PPC.
- The creativity to suggest new initiatives for the Old St. Mary’s community while helping to prioritize the ideas identified.
- The availability to contribute up to 5 hours/month outside of meeting time to help with ad hoc projects or subcommittees as the need arises.
- The ability to serve as additional “eyes” and “ears” for the Pastor. They should have a willingness to deliberately befriend a diversity of people within the Parish community.
PPC Members are expected to be active participants in the life of the Parish, including attending Mass on a weekly basis, contributing regularly to the financial needs of the Parish, and pitching in if last-minute needs arise at liturgical and social events. Members of the PPC are not expected to organize regularly-scheduled liturgical and social events of the year.
