Our History

Old St. Mary’s traces its roots to 1833, when approximately 100 “Catholics of Chicago” petitioned the Bishop of St. Louis for a pastor, establishing the first Catholic parish in the area. This early Saint Mary’s parish would go on to become the first cathedral parish of Chicago, a designation it held until the Great Fire of 1871.

The Paulist Fathers began serving the parish in 1903. Today’s location is the sixth site of Old St. Mary’s, with all previous sites situated in or around the Loop area of the city.
