Church Architecture and Design

Our church building at 1500 S. Michigan Avenue, designed by Serena Sturm Architects, Ltd. (formerly Prisco, Serena, Sturm), was dedicated on July 21, 2002. This beautiful worship space received the Association of Licensed Architects Silver Award in 2003.

The stained glass windows were created by award-winning artist Cindy Kessler of Loveland, Ohio. The nave windows depict Mary as the new Eve and Christ as the new Adam, who gives all on the tree of life—the cross. The crucifix, which once hung behind the altar in our previous church, is now flanked by red glass symbolizing the Blood of Christ, flowing upward toward the Ascension window above.

Behind the tabernacle in the Eucharistic Chapel, the stained glass features wheat and grapes. Its sweeping lines evoke not only the communion cup but also open hands and an open heart.

Our womb-shaped baptismal font accommodates baptisms of adults by immersion and infants in the smaller upper pool.

The evocative Intimate Holy Family statue, located in the sanctuary, was created by Bramante Studio of Kitchener, Ontario.

The Daily Mass Chapel houses a sculpture of Our Lady of the Assumption, brought from one of our previous church buildings. The east-facing window, which looks out onto Michigan Avenue, illustrates Psalm 113: “From the rising of the sun to its setting let the name of the Lord be praised.” This window received the international BENE Visual Art Award for Stained Glass (2003–2004). The west-facing window near the Stations of the Cross reflects the same psalm verse with the theme “broken sun, broken Son.” The Stations themselves were created by Suzanne M. Young of Oakland, Michigan.
